FOOD STRUGGLING ISSUES STRAIN STUDENTS AT BUNDA COLLEGE
Following crisis of hunger Malawi is facing this year, students at Bunda college as one of the campus of Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) are struggling too with he nger in their living basis.
Normally, education to be successful health status of students must have considered as first priority. Reports collected from many students seems that 8 out of 10 students stressed almost every day but no access of more than 3 days per week of having delicious food to be consumed. Chikondi Chagoma first year student said that he was disappointed after experiencing life in college especially on the protocol towards food consumption issues yet he worked hard in secondary to enjoy life in college. He continued that his guardian’s earnings are much less comparing to what he demands here in campus. According to him increases in maize prices due to devaluation of Kwacha and scarcity of maize in this country puts him in serious bad conditions and he tells that his performance affected too.
"As for me, time back I used to take tea before attending any morning class session but currently I stopped because spending K4500 for only one packet of sugar it sounds like am misusing my money. 90g packet of sugar which mostly used 2 times its now at K350, being a student how much am I supposed to spent by the end of the one month? After all I have also to buy potatoes or African cake for me have full set just for breakfast. Coming lunch I have to struggle again more than I struggled in the morning. So I decided that even if concentration in the morning classes should be less as result of no breakfast but my first meal should be lunch hour.” Third year student, Ralph Phinnily Chitemango said.
Even though the case is like this, students agreed that there are some students whom are under government organization known as higher education students’ loans and grants board which provide them with tuition and upkeep inform of loan which they are expected to pay back after graduating from the school. Interviewed group of people on this matter claimed that the money is not enough to buy their basic needs for the entire semester. One semester mostly its about three to four months but the money is for one month. Additionally, elaborate that sometimes money transferred into their accounts last month of their semester after already struggled amidst not semester. Moreover, it’s not everyone who is under this organization meaning other students who deserves this leaved.
“I think all these happens because many of us are from local communities where our parents dedicated in farming as productive activity for living. No better job or business practiced which provides huge money as we can need. Other factor may be misinformation that people outside there have that university students do school while earning some money every month as salary. This pushes some of our uncles and cousins to ignoring helping us because they lack idea of what real life in the campus is. Despite that, let me also confess that this year we have a problem of hunger everywhere, so we choose to understand our parents and guardians with unsaficient they get no matter what.” Finale student, Robert Boyd said.
Disgusting issues like this, could be one of the challenge pushes weak-minded students feeling as its beyond their control and start to attend bad companies. Think of public university like Bunda what kind of hope now one can have? Girls forced themselves to have more than relationship just to make sure money for bundle at least should be covered. Others get themselves used with blessers with exchange for money and groceries.
Assumption can be, not only Bunda going through this circumstances. It may be possible that almost all public and private universities including boding secondary schools are passing through this. By analyzing this, as a country should we expect to produce real qualified experts in our schools. If our end justified by means are we going to have better Malawi?
